ToV 2012 at Lalbagh by BAS & KJVS

ToV 2012 at Lalbagh by BAS & KJVS

BAS and KJVS conducted a public outreach event to view the transit of venus at Lal Bagh today,
We were present at the venue before the sunrise itself, but due to clouds, the observations could not begin till 7AM.  After that, Sun played hide and seek behind the clouds till the end of ToV.

The crowd response was amazing. There were more than 500 people who saw the transit.

Thanks to all BAS and KJVS volunteers for their great support.

Here are some photos of the transit and the crowd.

Transit of Venus did not disappoint the masses
There was an environment that it may not be possible to watch transit of Venus this time because of monsoon clouds. But there was no disappointment. Even though there was clouds up to 8am, the clouds cleared the sun after that. This made people to watch the last transit of Venus of the century.
Karnataka Jnana Vijnana Samithi (KJVS) and Bangalore Astronomical society(BAS) has conducted many workshops to involve public and students in the event. There was very good response. Six different types of telescopes were arranged at lalbag for safe and meaningful view of the transit. Upma and kesaribath was served to all the public to educate public that nothing will happen to food during eclipses and transits. Prof.M.R.Nagaraj addressed the public and answered their querry on transit. People kept on coming till the last contact at 10.25   and people could see the last contact. Along with telescopes solar filters and books were arranged for sales. Mr.Naveen Nanjundappa, Vice President, BAS and E.Basavaraju, Secretary, KJVS coordinated the event.
Similar program was organised by KJVS in M.G.Stadium, Tumkur, Kadapa maidhan in Dharwar, Municiple ground in Hospet, High school ground in Hassan and in others centers.
Both KJVS and Bangalore astronomical society has decided to continue the spirit evolved during this process by organising workshops related to astronomy in future.
